MassHealth doesn’t treat every resource in the same way. Its treatment of a home, savings, and income depends on program rules and the applicant’s circumstances. The Five-Year Look-Back Period for MassHealth

MassHealth examines transfers during that period to determine whether property was transferred for less than fair market value.

A disqualifying transfer can create a period of ineligibility. MassHealth calculates its length using the transferred value and Massachusetts’ average monthly private-pay cost for care. Transfers That May Not Cause a Penalty
